9 Best Day Trips From Marrakech By Car

Marrakech is one of the best-positioned cities in Morocco for day trips. The mountains start an hour south. The Atlantic is two and a half hours west. The Sahara's edge sits forty minutes outside the medina. Here are the nine routes our visitors return to most often, sorted by what kind of day you want.

Quick answer

The classics are Essaouira (coast), Ourika Valley (Atlas), and Ouzoud Waterfalls. For history, Aït Ben Haddou via the Tichka pass is the most rewarding. For mountain altitude, Imlil and Oukaïmeden. For desert, Agafay forty minutes out. All nine are doable from Marrakech as same-day trips with the right car.

The classics — coast, valley, waterfall

Essaouira — 2h45 west on the A1 motorway. A walled coastal town with a working fishing port, a different food scene, and weather ten degrees cooler than Marrakech in summer. Easy day trip; better as an overnight if you can spare it.

Ourika Valley — 1h south into the foothills. River walk, riverside lunch, the seven cascades at the end of the road. The shortest escape from medina heat.

Ouzoud Waterfalls — 2h30 northeast. The largest waterfalls in North Africa. Crowded by midday, so leave early. Bring shoes that handle wet rocks.

Beyond the classics — kasbahs and mosques

Aït Ben Haddou — 3h30 each way over the Tichka pass. UNESCO-listed kasbah, used in everything from Lawrence of Arabia to Game of Thrones. Doable in a day if you start at 7am; better as an overnight in Ouarzazate.

Tinmel Mosque — 1h45 south. A 12th-century Almohad mosque in a quiet mountain village. Less visited than Aït Ben Haddou, more atmospheric for it. Worth the detour if you're already heading toward the Atlas.

Mountains — Imlil, Oukaïmeden, Toubkal

Imlil & Mount Toubkal — 1h30 south. Imlil is the trailhead village for North Africa's tallest peak. Day-trippers walk the lower trails; serious hikers stay overnight before summiting. Either way, the drive in is a highlight.

Oukaïmeden — 1h30, the same valley as Imlil but a different turn. Morocco's ski station in winter, summer pasture and Berber rock carvings the rest of the year. The road climbs to 2,600m — winter requires snow chains; otherwise straightforward.

Desert and lake — Agafay, Lalla Takerkoust

Agafay Desert — 40 min outside the medina. Stone desert, not sand dunes. The closest desert experience to Marrakech, and the easiest to do as a half-day. Sunset camel rides, lunch at one of the camps, back in the city by evening.

Lake Lalla Takerkoust — 1h southwest. A reservoir lake with a few quiet restaurants on the shore. Off the tourist circuit, popular with Marrakchis on weekends. Pairs well with Agafay if you want a half-day mix.

What to drive for each one

Coast and easy mountain (Essaouira, Ourika, Lalla Takerkoust) — Logan Automatic does the work. Motorway and paved valley roads, no special needs.

Higher mountain or longer drives (Imlil, Oukaïmeden, Aït Ben Haddou, Tinmel) — Duster is the right call. Higher clearance for the switchbacks, more comfortable on long mountain hours.

Premium / multiple stops (Agafay + Lalla Takerkoust same day, or a full Tichka run with passengers) — Class A or T-Roc. Comfortable seats matter when the day is long.

"Marrakech is the city that keeps giving you better day trips than the city itself."

Frequently asked

Common questions.

How early do we need to leave for Aït Ben Haddou as a day trip?
By 7am at the latest. The drive is 3h30 each way; that's seven hours of driving plus time to walk the kasbah. Most visitors prefer to make it an overnight stop in Ouarzazate.
Is the Tichka pass scary to drive?
Less than it used to be. Switchbacks at altitude with truck traffic, but recent road improvements (guard rails along nearly the full length, better signage) have made it noticeably calmer. Take it slow on the descent and you are fine.
Can we do Essaouira and Ouzoud on the same day?
No — they're in opposite directions, 5 hours apart. Pick one per day.
What about driving in winter (December–February)?
The classics (Essaouira, Ourika, Agafay, Lalla Takerkoust) are unchanged. Oukaïmeden may need snow chains. The Tichka pass and Aït Ben Haddou are usually fine but check forecasts.
Are these trips reasonable with kids?
Yes. Ourika is the easiest with small children — short drive, river to play in. Agafay works as a half-day. Aït Ben Haddou is a long day; only with kids who travel well.
