Marrakech International Film Festival 2025: Travel Lessons From The Festival

The Marrakech International Film Festival turns the city into a different version of itself for ten days every winter. Red carpets at the Palais des Congrès, screenings in the Jemaa el-Fna at night, the festival hotels booked out months ahead, and a different kind of traffic. Here is what visitors who came for the festival learned about staying, moving, and timing the trip.

Quick answer

The festival runs late November to early December. Book your accommodation 4–6 months ahead and your car at the same time. Stay near the Hivernage or in the Palmeraie for the easiest reach to the Palais des Congrès. Plan one car for the festival district, one for the medina; or hire a Class A and let it cover both.

Where the festival actually happens

The festival has a primary venue — the Palais des Congrès in the Hivernage district — and a secondary, more public layer in the Jemaa el-Fna, where free screenings run on a giant outdoor screen most nights of the festival.

Beyond those two anchors, the festival spreads. Press conferences at the Cinéma le Colisée, jury events at the major hotels, masterclasses at private cinemas. Knowing which side you're attending shapes where you stay.

Where to stay — and why

Hivernage — the festival neighborhood. La Mamounia, Royal Mansour, the Sofitel, the Hivernage Hotel & Spa. You walk to the Palais des Congrès. Highest cost, lowest logistics.

Palmeraie — fifteen minutes drive from the Palais. Quieter, more residential, large villas with gardens. Best for groups; needs a car for every movement.

The medina — for the Jemaa el-Fna evenings. Romantic for the festival's public side, harder for ticketed events that end at midnight in Hivernage. A car parked outside the medina solves it.

How to move during the ten days

Festival traffic is real for ten days. Hivernage's main avenues fill up early evening; the area between the Palais and La Mamounia becomes near-walking-pace from 6pm. Plan accordingly.

The honest play: stay in walking distance for evening events, and use the car for daytime trips out of the city. Atlas, Agafay, Essaouira are quieter that week — the city pulls inward, the surroundings open up.

What still works after the festival ends

Most of what we wrote during the 2025 festival still applies for future editions. The festival is annual, the venues are stable, the month is locked. The traffic patterns repeat. The hotel-booking rhythm is the same — six months out for the well-located properties.

What changes year to year is the program — the films, the jury, the masterclasses. Watch the official site close to the festival window for the schedule.

The car that fits the festival week

For the festival itself, a comfortable arrival matters. The Mercedes-Benz Class A handles the Hivernage red-carpet drop-offs without standing out for the wrong reasons.

For day trips during the week (Atlas day, Essaouira morning), the Logan or Duster does the work — same drives we recommend year-round.

If you only book one car for the whole stay, the Class A covers both: festival evenings and a comfortable Atlas drive in the daytime.

"Marrakech keeps being itself during the festival. The festival just adds a layer."

Frequently asked

Common questions.

When does the festival happen?
Late November to early December every year. The exact dates are announced about three months ahead on the official festival website.
Are tickets hard to get?
Public Jemaa el-Fna screenings are free. Palais des Congrès screenings are ticketed; some go on sale to the public, others are reserved for industry. Plan your tickets at the same time as your travel — late October is the realistic window.
Is Marrakech busy outside the festival venues?
The medina runs at its normal rhythm. Hivernage is louder and slower than usual. Day-trip destinations (Atlas, Agafay, Essaouira) tend to be slightly quieter that week — visitors converge on the city, not its surroundings.
Should I rent for the entire ten days?
If you're attending more than four days, yes — the rental cost is less than four taxi runs to Hivernage and back. Free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup, so booking early is risk-free.
Will airport pickup work during festival week?
Yes. Menara airport runs normally; festival arrivals don't disrupt rental delivery. Book the pickup at the same time as the festival ticket and you avoid one of the busier hours of the festival shuttle queues.
